Phil Dellar 3rd Dan Instructor
I have been privileged to train with Red Sun throughout my Karate journey. The club's philosophy has remained consistent, fostering students' growth rather than restricting it, and encouraging members to forge their own paths.
After sustaining injuries playing Football and then Squash, I sought a less risky activity. Following a recommendation from a work colleague, I joined my first class with Red Sun Karate in 2006, unaware of the profound impact it would have on my life. I advanced through the Kyu Grades, achieving Shodan in 2010 and Nidan in 2013.
Upon joining WTKO in 2013, I attempted my 3rd Dan in 2019 but did not pass. However, this setback served as an opportunity for reflection and growth, leading me to successfully attain my Sandan Grade at the WTKO Summer Camp in 2023, under Sensei’s Amos, Mullin, and Middleton. Each grading reflects hard work, perseverance, and the encouragement of Sensei Needham.
My training regimen includes two classes per week, supplemented by an online class with Sensei Mullin. Additionally, I visit the gym five times a week for strength and conditioning. Thanks to Sensei Needham, there are numerous opportunities to train with exceptional Karateka, many from outside WTKO. This extended family of like-minded students and friends serves as a continual source of inspiration and validates that I am on the right path.
Beyond regular training, I dedicate time to researching the history of Kata to deepen my understanding and convey its essence in both performance and application.
From a young age, I was captivated by martial arts, inspired by iconic figures and popular culture phenomena. Bruce Lee’s incredible speed and philosophy, Chuck Norris’s undeniable prowess, and the thrilling Sho Kosugi Ninja films of the 1980s ignited my passion for karate. These heroes and cinematic adventures fuelled my imagination, laying the foundation for my lifelong dedication.
… and I still want to be a Ninja.
Some of my favourite quotes that influence my training include:

"A black belt is nothing more than a belt that goes around your waist. Being a black belt is a state of mind and attitude." – Rick English

"The only time we fail is when we stop trying." – Chuck Norris
